Zambia Warns of Heavy Rains and Flood Risk as Cyclone Gezani Moves into Mozambique Channel

Zambia’s Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has warned of increased rainfall and possible flooding as Tropical Cyclone Gezani advances into the Mozambique Channel after striking Madagascar earlier this week.

The ministry confirmed that Cyclone Gezani made landfall on Madagascar’s east coast on Feb. 10 with maximum average wind speeds of 148 km/h and a central minimum pressure of about 975 hPa.

Although the system has weakened slightly, it remains a Severe Tropical Storm, now carrying sustained winds of 130 km/h and pressure of 985 hPa.

Authorities said the storm is expected to enter the Mozambique Channel on Thursday, where its interaction with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) could intensify rainfall over Zambia.

“Widespread rainfall with periodical heavy falls may lead to flooding, especially in low-lying areas and along riverbanks,” the ministry said in a statement.

Officials also cautioned that the system could result in waterlogging, increased thunderstorms, lightning hazards and strong winds capable of causing damage to infrastructure and vegetation.

The ministry urged citizens to remain alert and follow updates from the Zambia Meteorological Department.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges.

“During thunderstorms, avoid outdoor activities and seek shelter indoors,” the ministry said, adding that loose outdoor items should be secured to prevent wind damage.

Cyclone Gezani is the latest weather system to affect Southern Africa during the ongoing rainy season, heightening concerns over flood risks in several countries across the region.
