Zimbabwe’s Rural Communities Get Boost to Combat Hunger and Malnutrition

The French Embassy has funded a new initiative to tackle pressing nutrition and agricultural challenges in Zimbabwe’s Masvingo and Mwenezi districts.

The “Nourish and Thrive” project, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe and World Vision, aims to improve food security, nutrition, and livelihoods for vulnerable communities.

Erratic rainfall, limited access to diverse foods, and climate-induced shocks have exacerbated food insecurity and child malnutrition in the region.

The project will support 4,000 households with agricultural inputs, including drought-tolerant seeds and fertilizers, and provide targeted cash transfers to 1,000 children under two years.

The project focuses on strengthening community capacities in nutrition-sensitive agriculture, promoting Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) practices, and improving access to nutritious foods.

Village Health Workers and agricultural extension officers will receive training in climate-smart agriculture and nutrition-sensitive farming practices.

By combining nutrition, agriculture, and community empowerment, the Nourish and Thrive project offers a pathway to greater resilience for households in Masvingo and Mwenezi districts.
